The microlocation

quiet flat for rent Santa Catalina

At Calle Cotoner, 37, you're just around the corner from the famous market hall in Sta Catalina. But at the same time, you're in a quiet and relaxed micro-location that's a must-see!

About Santa Catalina - Es Jonquet

I can't remember the first time I went to Santa Catalina - Es Jonquet. But it is a district of Palma that is so different from the rest of the old town. And I immediately liked it very much.

The buildings are rather low, everything takes place around the Mercat (the market hall). And there is quite a lot going on.

In the evening, it's a hustle and bustle. All the restaurants are open. At least on weekends, people crowd through the streets, there is a hustle and bustle, until the officially decreed night's rest sets in relatively abruptly and Santa Catalina sinks into sleep until 9 / 10 in the morning.

The situation is completely different in Es Jonquet. The small hill above the harbour of Palma, like a peninsula in front of the colourful hustle and bustle of Santa Catalina, is a flowery oasis of tranquillity.

Santa Catalina begins directly behind Palma's Avenida Argentina. The almost village-like ambience probably accounts for part of its appeal. Old and new meet here and merge into a bustling melange. Fishermen, rope makers and millers used to live here. Even today, the windmills from the 18th century are a clearly visible sign of the district's origins. But it actually takes its name from a former hospital dedicated to St. Catalina of Alexandria (patron saint of merchants and sailors).

The picturesque traditional small buildings, which nestle one against the other, are rarely really straight. Each façade shines (more or less) in a different bright colour, contrasted by the butnen Persianas, as the Spaniards call their practical wooden shutters. The small balconies are always full of plants. Not much else fits on them.

The neighbourhood is grouped around the covered market hall, the Mercat. It serves residents, yachts, restaurants, cafés and bars. And it is also the culinary centre of Santa Catalina. Every day a culinary meeting place for many people who simply go there to eat or try different types of ham before buying a whole pork run.

Es Jonquet is a small part of Santa Catalina facing the sea, which is closed to general traffic and therefore very quiet. Since the discotheques used to be here, the district has been incredibly upgraded. Life is just around the corner here, and you are right in the middle of the city. And you also have peace and a sea view!

Mercat de Santa Catalina

Built in 1920, the Mercat de Santa Catalina is Palma's oldest food market and overflows with stalls selling fresh meat, fish, fruit, vegetables and gourmet produce. Regular customers include discerning yacht and restaurant chefs, as well as locals and residents. Eager chefs will find vegetables at the Frutas Ramón stall that are usually hard to come by on Mallorca. Strengthen yourself in one of the traditional market bars or feast on Japanese food at Arume Sake Bar. Or go traditional Spanish at Juan Frau, recommended in our Palma Paella Restaurant Guide.
