The history of the Day of the Balearic Islands is a very exciting and is not inferior to many a great empire of the world

This special holiday has a deep-rooted historical significance in Mallorca and the other Balearic Islands. Since ancient times, these islands played an important role in history and had to overcome some challenges. Initially they were dependent on the Phoenicians, but when the inhabitants started to become piratical, the Romans conquered the region in 123 BC and Romanized southern Spaniards settled in Mallorca, which led to the foundation of Palma and Polentia.

The islands were conquered by the Vandals and later integrated by the Byzantine Empire, but their independence began to emerge in the Middle Ages. In the 10th century they became part of the Caliphate of Cordoba and were finally conquered by James I of Catalonia. Mallorca even counted as an independent state for a time, before being conquered by Peter IV of Aragon and united with the tribal lands. In 1833, the Balearic Islands were officially established and towards the end of the 19th century a movement began demanding regional independence. Finally, in 1983, the autonomous status of the province was recognized. This eventful history makes this holiday an important event in Mallorca and the Balearic Islands.
