Burger and Waffle Break

In search of an Austrian delicacy – in a restaurant in Can Pastilla I stumbled upon Strammer Max in pink …

No new miracle diet …

I was out and about in Can Pastilla in search of the Austrian restaurant Vennemann´s. And without success. Both addresses—both the one from the article and the one from Google Maps—led only to the EROSKI supermarket that dominates this “center” with its run-down, brittle charm. For everyone who doesn’t know yet: One of the two German supermarkets is also here. Another one, with the sonorous name Mundi Culinario, is located in Poligono Son Bugadelles. If any of you can confirm that Vennemann´s either no longer exists or I was simply too stupid to find it, please write it in the comments below!

pretty in pink!

Long story short: in my search for Austrian delights, I passed a rather pink place. On the way back, I took a closer look and was surprised by the unusual name: “Burger and Waffle Break”.

Barbie meets “Strammer Max”

On the board that a staff member was just carrying out, they were advertising “Strammer Max,” “Gofres,” “Crêpes,” and “Cocktails.” An unusual mix, too. The two tables in front of the place were pink, just like the chairs. I sat down and noticed that on my table there wasn’t just a hamburger—ashtray. There was also a huge other ashtray. Next to a pink plastic pineapple and a plastic potted flower. That sounds awful now, but in a Barbie-esque way it looked quite coherent and somehow nice.

cultural exchange

At the other table sat a Spaniard, Juan, who then asked me whether this style was typical of German places. And what “Strammer Max” was. After I explained that in Germany we tend to use rather little color. And that the Strammer Max I know and love is piled high with pumpernickel, Katenschinken, a fried egg on both sides, cheese, ketchup, mustard, and slices of pickle, he presumably thought: “Germans are crazy …”.
At “Burger and Waffle Break,” the Strammer Max is actually made with homemade onion bread made from rye flour. It sounded tempting, but I was more in the mood for something sweet. So I started to order a waffle. This request was countered with the question, “which one”? “On a stick” or this or that? A bit overwhelmed, I asked for the house recommendation: “the waffle on a stick.”

was it good?

The cappuccino came quickly and was good; the waffle took a little longer, but it really was freshly made and a ravishing revelation in red. Somehow I had expected that … It tasted fantastic. Light, fluffy, pleasantly sweet, a little crunchy on the outside—exactly how it should be!

Nadescha Leitze, the owner of “Burger and Waffle Break,” has created something iconic here in a special way—a little gem that has only been open for a few weeks. In any case, she has presumably simply realized herself. And you can feel that dedication! And it’s only consistent, then, to offer your own favorite dishes too, even if the combination may not immediately make sense to the guest.

I will definitely come back here. And for an outing with children, the lovingly and meticulously decorated interior alone is worth the trip. Cuddly toys, Nutella jars, Minnie Mouse. Everything, in some way, truly brought together in peaceful harmony. So “Burger and Waffle Break,” please stay as pretty in pink as you are and keep doing your thing!
And many thanks to Juan, who—when my battery was dead—sent me his photos and made them available for this article! Muchas graçias!

Update on the Strammer Max from 22.02.2022

I’ve just received an email from Juan. In it he writes that a short time later he went back to “Burger and Waffle Break” because the Strammer Max had piqued his curiosity.
I won’t keep you in suspense for long: it not only looked great on the little board, it also tasted good to him! Do his photos make you hungry too? Thanks again, Juan!
