A beach beyond the ordinary

The beautiful Es Trenc beach deserves a special appreciation in the context of its historical importance and proximity to the settlement of Sant Jordi, located about 6.5 km away and part of Ses Salines. The name of this village refers to its close connection with the salt flats, once used by the Romans and later by the Phoenicians. At that time, salt was considered "the white gold" and had an invaluable role in the preservation of food. Today, the salt flats are still active and surrounded by enchanting pink lagoons, salt mountains and unique wildlife.

The name "Es Trenc", which means "break", refers to the moment when the salt flats broke through the barrier of dunes. There are different narratives about how this happened, but the most plausible one says that in the 18th century a tsunami, triggered by the famous Lisbon earthquake, broke through the row of dunes and connected the wetland to the Mediterranean Sea.

The Es Trenc coastline and the Salobrar de Campos together form the Es Trenc-Salobrar Natural Park. This protected ecosystem is home to 171 species of birds, including flamingos, ospreys and marsh harriers. The particular vegetation, adapted to the salinity of the soil, favors the habitats for these animals and is supported by the dune strips.

Beach features

The beautiful Es Trenc beach stretches for 1,900 meters and is 22 meters wide. This keeps the number of bathers pleasant and uncrowded outside the high season. The waves are usually moderate, making it a great choice for families with children. All the usual beach services are available, including lifeguards, restrooms and showers. If you want, you can rent sunbeds and umbrellas, and there is also a selection of bars and beach kiosks to cater to your physical needs. Es Trenc is definitely a wonderful place to enjoy relaxing and unforgettable beach days.

All along the beach you can see concrete structures built during World War II to serve as bunkers and artillery emplacements, although they were never used for that purpose.

Activities at Es Trenc beach

Es Trenc differs from most other beaches on Mallorca in that there are no water sports activities offered here. There are no opportunities to water ski, rent a banana. Jet skis or similar water sports equipment are also not available here. Instead, the beach atmosphere is focused on the pure experience of nature and the beauty of the surroundings.

Since there are no shade trees, it is recommended to bring your own parasol to protect yourself from the intense sun. Alternatively, fixed parasols can be rented on site.

Some sections of the beach are supervised by lifeguards to ensure the safety of bathers. However, please note that the number of lifeguards may be limited.

A few years ago the old beach kiosks at Es Trenc were demolished, but since then new mobile beach bars called "chiringuitos" have been approved. These new beach bars are located at certain intervals along the beach and offer snacks, drinks and often public toilets. This way, visitors can make their day at the beach even more enjoyable and refresh themselves in between.

Location

Es Trenc is located in the south of Mallorca, between the villages of Sa Ràpita and Colònia de Sant Jordi. To visit this beautiful beach pearl, it takes about 45 minutes by rental car from Palma de Mallorca. Visitors coming from the center of the island or the west can take route MA-6040 to Colònia de Sant Jordi. From there, there is an access road that eventually leads to the parking lot behind the wetland of Salobrar de Campos. Note, however, that parking fees apply. At the beginning of the season, it is advisable to arrive early and plan your visit, as parking is limited.

Nudists can also swim here, but privacy in summer is limited compared to Ses Covetes, the neighboring beach.

After a day on Es Trenc beach, there are several options to extend your time. Nearby and really recommendable you will find S'Embat Es Trenc, which specializes in grilled dishes and offers an appealing decoration and occasional live music.
