Just when you think all the festive events are over - Christmas, the Three Kings and Sant Antoni - Palma switches into party mode to honor its protector, Sant Sebastià. Why not come along and be part of this living tradition?

Pyromaniacs, communal barbecues and plenty of live music are on the agenda when the city of Palma honors its patron saint Sant Sebastià. And not only on his actual day of honour on Saturday, 20 January, but also days before and after, there is an extensive program of festivities that encompasses the entire city. The jubilation knows no bounds.

Barbecue areas

A special highlight of these festivities is undoubtedly the street barbecue on January 19. Everywhere, on every corner, you will find barbecues from private individuals, bars and even public places, creating an inviting atmosphere. The streets are filled with cheerful people, good vibes and tantalizing smells of delicious barbecued meat.

Just dare to let yourself drift along the main traffic arteries. Soak up the atmosphere, stop on a corner, listen to the "batucadas" (a group with Brazilian rhythm drums with African influences) and simply get together with other people. You'll find a place where you feel comfortable, have a barbecue and enjoy the rest of the evening in good company. At some point, there are special moments when people start singing, dancing or laughing while you enjoy your grilled meat in the heat of the flames. That's what Sant Sebastià is all about.

There are two types of barbecue places: the "public" ones, which are usually quite crowded, and the "private" ones, which are run by the bars in the area and available to their customers. It's convenient to just walk into one of these bars that offer meat, drinks and barbecue without having to fight for a spot. If you are a bit more adventurous, you can also bring your own barbecue for your "tribe" and set it up in the square. This option is also very popular and adds tremendous authenticity.

In my case, I opted for the strategy I always recommend. Pick smaller places, away from the big but spectacular crowds like in the Plaza Mayor. I have always appreciated the charm of smaller and warmer, but equally festive and special squares, like Plaça del Pes de la Palla, Plaça Llorenç Bisbal or Plaza Josep Maria Quadrado, which are my walking tips every year.

Sant Sebastià Concerts

The numerous concerts held as part of the Sant Sebastià festivals are undoubtedly a particular highlight. A rich repertoire of different styles delights the ears and leaves nothing to be desired. Ranging from traditional folk music to contemporary hits, the concerts create a multifaceted and captivating soundscape to suit every music lover.

As a novelty this year, there will be an after-work party in Cort Square, which starts at 6 p.m., and a festival in Plaza Mayor, which starts at 8 p.m. on Saturday, January 20. On Sunday, January 21, there will be a big concert with the music group Hombres G in the Trui Son Fusteret area. In this way, the format that was introduced last year with Antònia Font will be repeated.

The city of Palma becomes a vibrant center these days. Party-goers of all ages, friends and families roam the streets and experience a rousing evening.

Program

This year's Fiesta promises to be a particularly exciting experience, with another host of activities that have already started this Saturday, January 13. Just take a look at the full program here. Another outstanding event we would like to mention that you should not miss is the Correfoc on January 28th, which starts on the Riera Bridge and parades through the streets of Palma with impressive performances by Dimonis and Bèsties de Foc.
